Treating diarrhea at home

If you have already visited the toilet more than three times, and the stool is still liquid, it is most likely diarrhea. Diarrhea or diarrhea (folk) - frequent watery bowel movements that are accompanied by abdominal pain. If this condition continues for more than 14 days, it turns from acute to chronic. The main thing to remember is that diarrhea is not a disease in itself, but only a symptom.

The reasons vary: from strong feelings to... Often, diarrhea is infectious. But there are some general recommendations on how to deal with this disaster as quickly as possible. Correct behavior at home when you have an upset stomach will save you from dehydration. Although not dangerous at first glance, diarrhea is one of the common causes of child mortality in underdeveloped countries. Therefore, if improvement does not occur within a few days, you should definitely consult a doctor.

Nutrition for diarrhea

For mild diarrhea, diet will help you recover.

  • The basic principle is as much fluid as possible (3-4 liters per day). You need to drink water, mineral water (preferably from a pharmacy, which will restore the balance of minerals in the body), apple juice, black and herbal tea, jelly, rice water. Prohibited (3 days after diarrhea stops): coffee, alcohol, dairy products, tomato, pineapple, orange juice.
  • With diarrhea, along with the liquid, we also lose microelements necessary for the normal functioning of the body. To replenish them, you can use a glucose-saline solution. To prepare it, you will need to mix a liter of water, 250 g of orange juice, 100 g of sugar, a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of soda.
  • In such conditions, you need easily digestible food and products with an astringent effect. The first day of diarrhea, perhaps eating thin porridge, low-fat chicken broth, crackers, boiled eggs, black tea. If you feel better, you can add boiled vegetables, meat and fish.
  • Excluded from the diet: fruits, raw vegetables, dried fruits, confectionery and flour products, semi-finished products, any dairy products, fried and fatty foods, spices, black bread.
  • You shouldn’t even indulge in chewing gum; it contains sorbitol, which can worsen stool disorders.

Antidiarrheal medications

Anti-diarrhea drugs are divided into several groups:

  1. ─ agents that reduce intestinal secretion;
  2. ─ sorbents;
  3. ─ srobiotics;
  4. ─ enzymes;
  5. ─ herbal medicine.

1) Drugs that reduce intestinal secretion. These include anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs, which are used from the first day of diarrhea in short courses for acute infectious diarrhea.

  • Indomethacin;
  • Diclofenac.
  • Sulfasalazine is an exception; long-term use is possible with.

2) Sorbents – drugs that bind and remove liquid, toxins, bacteria, and gases from the body. All sorbents are taken 2 hours before taking other medications. Contraindicated for problems with nutrient absorption.

  • activated carbon is taken 1 tablet per 10 kg of weight (but up to 10 tablets per day);
  • smecta, dissolved in a glass of water, drunk 3-4 times a day;
  • a composition of white clay, bismuth salts, gluconate and calcium carbonate (de-nol or venter) - thickens the stool without being absorbed into the intestinal walls;
  • bilignin, polyphepane – powder from wood derivatives. Shake with water (1 tablespoon of powder per 100 ml of water).

3) Probiotics are agents that restore normal intestinal microflora damaged by diarrhea.

  • Enterol – contains transient microflora;
  • Hilak-forte – contains particles of intestinal microorganism;
  • Lactobacterin, linex, acylact, narine - supply the body with obligate intestinal flora.

4) Enzymes are medications that affect intestinal motility. Taken for problems with intestinal absorption.

  • Lopedium is effective for irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease. Contraindicated in bacterial diarrhea, as it delays the removal of toxins from the body.
  • antispasmodics (No-Shpa, Papaverine) - for abdominal pain, used from the first days of diarrhea, relieve pain and reduce intestinal motility.

Herbal medicine and traditional methods

  • Herbal medicine is treatment with decoctions and tinctures of herbs that slow down intestinal secretion. Can be taken from the first day of diarrhea.
  • Decoction of pomegranate peel. Boil 2 teaspoons of finely chopped peel in 250 ml of water. Take half a teaspoon half an hour before meals.
  • A decoction of viburnum berries with honey. To prepare the drink, pour 100 g of viburnum into 0.5 liters of water. Boil in a steam bath for 15 minutes and add two tablespoons of honey. Drink half a glass four times a day before meals.
  • A teaspoon of viburnum bark, poured into 250 ml of boiling water and left for half an hour, works wonders for diarrhea. Take a teaspoon three times a day.
  • Tea made from raspberry leaves or viburnum berries (brewed like regular tea) 3-4 times a day will help you recover quickly.
  • A teaspoon of alcohol tincture of calamus root acts as an antispasmodic and a “fastening” agent (no more than 2 spoons per day).
  • A mixture of oak root and calamus root. One tbsp. Pour 250 ml of boiling water over a spoon and leave for half an hour. Drink 50 ml 4 times a day before meals.
  • A spoonful of willow bark is poured with 250 ml of boiling water and kept in a steam bath for 20 minutes. Drink cold four times a day according to Art. spoon.
  • A decoction of unbroken rice. Fill a glass of grains with 1.5 liters. water. Place on low heat and cook until the rice is completely cooked. Strain. Drink 1.3 cups of warm broth every two hours.
  • Mix 30 g of St. John's wort, 20 g of marshmallow root and 40 g of rowan berries. 1 tbsp. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a spoonful of the mixture and leave for 1 hour. Drink, strain, 100 ml 3 times a day.
  • Blueberry tea 3 times a day will help you quickly cope with the disease.

You should not take any medications without a doctor's prescription if:

  • diarrhea started less than 6 hours ago;
  • feces mixed with blood;
  • diarrhea is accompanied by a temperature above 38 and other serious symptoms;
  • the child has diarrhea due to influenza or chickenpox;
  • You are pregnant.
  • bed rest and maintaining body heat;
  • drinking plenty of water;
  • drink small sips of water every half hour with a piece of saltine cracker;
  • diet;
  • Do not take drugs that reduce intestinal secretion during the first six hours of diarrhea; start with herbal medicine;
  • Before taking medications, carefully read the instructions and follow all recommendations;
  • do not take more than one medicine of the same group;
  • if one of the family members has diarrhea, the bathroom and toilet should be treated with bleach;
  • Wash the patient's soiled clothes separately in hot water.

You need to urgently seek qualified help if:

  • syndromes intensified;
  • body temperature has risen;
  • there are signs of dehydration;
  • antidiarrheal drugs did not work;
  • feces that are bloody or black in color (if you have not taken activated charcoal);
  • diarrhea continues for 10 days (or recurs periodically).

Preventive measures

To avoid recurrence of diarrhea after recovery, you need to follow simple rules:

  1. Always drink only boiled water.
  2. Wash your hands with soap before eating.
  3. Consume hot, cooked foods.
  4. Eat only washed vegetables and fruits.
  5. Eat regularly.
  6. Monitor storage conditions and expiration dates of products.
